Grow up Canada

about

When the convoys started to roll through our country in the earlier part of this year, this song came to me. It's political but hopefully folks can see the humour in it as well. It's only Canadian, eh?

Frankly I’ve been shocked for a while now at who Canadians actually are. At who I often am. Bigoted but not overtly racist, imitative it not militant, strong headed with weak arguments involving some riff on tradition. I want it to stop but maybe it’s who we’ve always been.

The internet is sometimes good for clarity. If you can judge thoughts to be actions in the physical world. That’s a lot of what is done now and I want to see how this either progresses or regresses.

All of these words to say, as Canadians, we have a choice: we can see how our southern neighbours behave in historical and political contexts and veer toward this, we can model ourselves off many other cultural identities throughout the world, we can turn to our indigenous populations for views into how their way has existed and continues to exist and the healing and healthy growth that might happen from looking in this direction or we can continue on in the Timmy Ho status quo that we’ve been engaged in for at least three decades. The choice is ours and as iconic Canadian song goes: if you decide not to choose, you still have made a choice.

Grow up Canada releases on July 1, 2022.

lyrics

Where your truck size matters
And your hockey teams never win
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

When it rains every week of winter
And no neighbours are your friends
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

Forest fires blazing as polar ice caps melt
Ignoring mass graves of children
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

When your privilege can take you cross the country
No matter what the science says
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

Where the politics and reason
Are so close to our southern friends
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

And before you say get out, go back to where you came from
You commie loving villain
I will remind you again that that too
Is not the Canada I grew up in, eh?

Where people who look different
Are framed as the other
That’s not the Canada I grew up in

When the weakest people are subjected to prejudice and hate
That’s not the Canada I grew up in
That’s not the Canada I grew up in
Or is it?
