Over Ground

This song is a bit of a departure for the Thom as Fred moniker but is actually kind of a return for Thom Golub the bassist/composer. With a pandemic twist.
I wrote all of this song while walking my dogs in the woods near where I live. The bassline came first, then the main melody and, on a later walk, the outro melody. I love it when these things just happen! It's rare enough that I'm always taken aback when it happens but occurs often enough for it to feel familiar.
Then it sat as an idea on my voice messages for months as - for this type of contemporary jazz tune - it seemed daunting to do it all from remote locations - daunting for me as the first instrument in; and as the writer as I was responsible solely for how the structure of the song runs. What I mean by this is there is no real time collaboration that normally happens with five musicians in the same room.
I looked to other people here in the jazz community here doing similar things as well as running it by Kirsten Elliott and Brett Miles to gauge this idea -their positive responses sure helped me make up my mind and do it! Thank you both.
The title Over Ground is in deference to what I was doing when I wrote this tune but also to the Chicago Underground Trio's Flamethrower recording, and in particular the opening track Quail - whose bassline I think I may have borrowed from. Thanks for making that fantastic record that resonates with me still, 21 years later.
